Two Exciting Announcements: Annual Radiothon & New, Larger Thrift Store Coming

Community Against Violence (CAV) will hold its 17th Annual Radiothon on Thursday, October 10th, from 7 am to 7 pm on KTAOS 101.9 FM radio station. This all-day programming is a fun chance to show support of CAV services, and for us to thank the community for working together to create safer communities over the 41 years since CAV began. It’s also a time when people can share their stories of hope and healing to inspire listeners.

The event, which will once again be emceed by beloved DJs, is also the annual opportunity to help support the essential services CAV provides in our northern New Mexico communities. Every $1 donated to CAV brings in approximately $10 in grant funds and helps fill funding gaps in the $2.9 million annual budget. This goes a long way to assure the community services will be there for the many families and individuals who have experienced the trauma of sexual and domestic violence, child and elder abuse, and stalking.

The annual CAV Radiothon has been where people, businesses, faith communities, and organizations come together to donate for the fiscal year and continue to build the safe community we all want. In the past year, more than 800 children and adults have accessed our services:

  • 24-Hour Hotline (575-758-9888);
  • Emergency Shelter and Community-Based Transitional Housing;
  • Emergency Food;
  • Civil Legal Attorney and Legal Advocacy Services;
  • Individual Counseling and Support Groups;
  • Children’s Programming and Parenting Support Group;
  • Advocacy and Case Management;
  • Children’s Advocacy Center for children and vulnerable adults (in the seven counties of north central/Eastern region of NM) who have experienced abuse;
  • CHANGES Program for self-referred and court-ordered people who are using domestic violence power and control tactics with their partners or family;
  • Prevention Education to schools, faith communities, businesses, and community groups;
  • CAV Thrift Store providing survivors with household and clothing items free of charge (see exciting news below!); and,
  • Referrals and resource information for the public.

Because our Northern New Mexico communities have many families and individuals struggling with abuse, CAV must be able to provide crisis intervention, prevention, and support and recovery programs. By calling in to CAV’s Radiothon at (575)758-8882 on Thursday, October 10th, you help make sure these services continue to be available to everyone who needs them.

Big News! CAV Store to Move to New Location!

Our community has steadfastly supported CAV by donating to and shopping at CAV’s Thrift Store. We are happy to announce the store will be moving to a new location! [Last week's Taos News has a story about our exciting news.]

Thanks to support from our donors and the Taos financial community, the board of directors of CAV has purchased the former TeamBuilders building at 1509 Paseo del Pueblo Sur (across the road from the Sagebrush Inn). In approximately nine months, we will open with greatly increased retail space for furniture, clothing, household goods, jewelry, and more, and increased parking and eased traffic flow.

Thank you for supporting our current location all these years with donated items and spending your hard-earned money in our store. You have allowed us to provide over $22,000 each year in store gift certificates to the survivors we serve and to other non-profits helping people (St. James, Taos Men’s Shelter, DreamTree, and Shared Table). As many of you know, we have completely outgrown our current space.

It's time to move!
